“Understanding people, bringing out the best in people, and connecting with other people – this is what will drive your business forward.” – Lindsay Adams, OAM

In anticipation of the upcoming Master Electricians Australia Conference this September, excitement is building around the keynote speaker Lindsay Adams, a renowned expert in business relationships and behavioural psychology. With over 20 years of experience and a proven methodology, Adams promises to deliver insights that can transform the way you approach your business.

We sat down with Lindsay to talk about how businesses can leverage their relationships and behavioural skills to be more successful. Here are five key takeaways you can look forward to learning and implementing from his talk.

1. Learn how to understand people with the Discovery Cube

A highlight of Adams’ success, the Discovery Cube, is a tool based on the DISC assessment. This model categorises behavioural styles into four quadrants, providing a simple yet powerful framework for understanding lightning-fast, yourself and others. “Understanding people, bringing out the best in people, and connecting with other people – this is what will drive your business forward,” Adams said. He explains that using methods highlighted by the Discovery Cube, can tailor your interactions to better align with the behavioural preferences of your employees, partners, and customers, making your communications more effective and meaningful.

Adams explains, “I can help members understand, first of all, their own behavioural style, and then those of their staff and significant others. DISC can show them how to identify where their customers or prospects fit and how to sell to them.” He explains that this understanding can significantly enhance your ability to motivate your team, network and connect with clients.

2. Motivate your employees and boost their productivity

“If you want your staff to do more, produce more, and be more, I’m going to give you some tips on how to do that.” – Lindsay Adams, OAM

Adams shares practical strategies for motivating your staff and enhancing productivity, emphasising the importance of understanding the unique behavioural styles of your team members. By adjusting your management approach to align with your team’s behavioural preferences, you can inspire greater performance and job satisfaction.

Adams draws from years of experience, noting, “I’ve been doing this now for a lot of years. The beauty is it’s a simple model, yet it’s very powerful. And if you know what to do, then it becomes almost second nature.”

3. Connect with prospects and simplify your sales

For those involved in sales, Adams’ methods allow you to tailor your sales approach to their preferences. By aligning your sales pitch with the prospect’s style, you can make the sales process smoother and more successful. This methodology has been refined over many years and is designed to be easily implemented.

During our conversation, Adams shared a story of when he met a printer at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Without building rapport, the printer immediately tried to sell his services, which was overwhelming and off-putting. Adams emphasised that you must build relationships first, find common ground, and gain credibility before making a sale.

4. Build and maintain strong business relationships

“Relationships underpin everything we do in business. You must get into relationships with your people.” -Lindsay Adams, OAM

Adams emphasises that relationships are the foundation of all business activities. He discusses the importance of building strong relationships with your employees, customers, and other stakeholders. “Relationships underpin everything we do in business. You must get into relationships with your people,” he states. Leading the conversation, sharing personal anecdotes and experiences, Adams illustrates how building genuine connections can turn challenges into opportunities.

One memorable story he shared involved his time working in debt collection: “I spent 18 years working in the tax office. I was doing debt collection, and if you want to get money out of people, you have to become their friend first. When I was 20, I visited a guy who owed us money, quoting the Income Tax Act and threatening to seize his truck. He revealed a shotgun and said, ‘Anyone who wants to seize my truck has to talk to me and my mate.’ I said, ‘Mate, I don’t want to seize your truck. I’m just a young bloke trying to do a job here.’ And that’s when I realised that being the enemy doesn’t work. You’ve got to get into a relationship.

5. Effectively network and get yourself a “Wing Buddy”

Networking is a crucial skill for any professional, and Adams provides valuable tips on how to do it effectively. One of his key strategies is using a “wing buddy”. “Never go networking alone. Take a wing buddy with you,” Adams advises. He explains how a wing buddy can facilitate introductions, help manage conversations, and create opportunities for meaningful interactions. This strategy not only makes networking more effective but also more enjoyable.

Adams also offers a three-step process for successful networking:

  1. Meeting people for the first time: Greet warmly, remember names, and start meaningful conversations.
  2. Keeping the conversation rolling: Be a good listener and maintain eye contact.
  3. Finishing the conversation: Have a prepared exit strategy to move on gracefully.
