Master Electricians Australia urges homeowners to stay off the naughty list this year by avoiding common Christmas electrical hazards with the release of their online ‘Elf-Help Checklist’ for a safe and supercharged Christmas.
Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Richards said ‘tis the season for Australian homeowners to take precautionary measures when lighting up their houses ahead of Christmas.
And he is encouraging consumers to look at the ‘Elf-Help Checklist’ on the Master Electricians Australia website for safety tips.
“The festive season is almost upon us with everyone decorating their houses with lighting inside and out, but this also means a heightened risk of fire or electric shocks at Christmas time,” Mr Richards said.
“We urge everyone to inspect lights for signs of damage to cords or plugs, signs of rust and excessive dust and to ensure all new purchases have Australian standards label and are used for its intended purpose.
“If you even suspect that your Christmas lights are damaged in any way, either get a qualified electrician to test them, or just throw them away.
“We just don’t want to see the happiest time of year turn to tragedy for the sake of a few dollars.”
The ‘Elf-Help Checklist’ includes:
- Ensuring lights and other appliance have an Australian approval number
- Having safety switches on all circuits in your home
- Only using designated outdoor electrical products outside the home
- Not using double adapters on power boards
- Having working smoke detectors
- Checking appliances and cables for damage before using them
“You will significantly increase your chances of staying safe this summer if you help ‘your-elf’ to this checklist, especially having safety switches installed,” Mr Richards said.
“If you are planning on going all out with extensive lighting decorations, please call a Master Electrician to install additional outdoor power points, rather than overloading existing circuits.”
