The Tasmanian Government has handed down its 2025–26 Budget, with a number of initiatives that will impact MEA members.

Key commitments include:

  • Increase Housing Supply
    The Government will continue to reduce red tape to boost housing supply—generating more work opportunities for our members in the building and construction sector.
  • Security of Payment
    Measures to prevent corporate phoenixing in the building industry, helping protect our subcontractor members from missed payments by repeat offenders operating under new company names.
  • Small Business Support
    The Government has announced a range of initiatives to help small businesses start, grow and manage disruption:

    • Investment in Small business Growth Strategy 2026 – a partnership with the Small Business Council of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce.
    • Small Business Start-Up Permit process, enabling small businesses to trial their concept for 12 months with a single permit.
    • Investment in the Online Business Advice Platform, enabling small businesses to access up-to-date, self-guided, ongoing business planning and support 24 hours a day, seven days a week
    • Investment in Innovation Hubs in Hobart and Launceston, supporting founders of innovative, high-growth businesses and potential start-ups;
    • Funding to develop an online tool to assist businesses for continuity planning and managing disruptions, in response to emergency events
    • A Rapid Response Fund, which provides financial assistance or advisory services for Tasmanian businesses in times where they experience business or industry disruption; and
    • Investment in the Tasmanian Business Advice Service, which provides free and independent business advice and support

MEA continues to work closely with the Tasmanian Government and key stakeholders on a range of local issues, including:
