The newly appointed Queensland Government recently announced significant changes to workplace safety regulations, reversing some previously introduced measures while shifting their focus towards addressing work-related violence and aggression.

Legislative Reversals

Recent amendments introduced by the Electrical Safety and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024, which permitted Health and Safety Representatives (HSR) and WHS entry permit holders (EPHs) to take photos, videos, measurements, and conduct tests at workplaces, will no longer proceed. This decision follows extensive advocacy by industry associations, including your industry advocate, the Master Electricians Australia (MEA).

Also announced is that Government has reinstated the requirement of the “24-hour notice period” for WHS permit holders to exercise the right of entry to a workplace. This move ensures that small and medium enterprises, which are already stretched thin with limited resources, are provided with sufficient notice.

Government’s Commitment to Safety by Focus on Work-Related Violence

The Queensland Government stated that it will prioritise focus more efforts on reducing work-related violence and aggression, including physical and sexual assault – creating safer and more respectful workplaces across Queensland.

This commitment will help foster an industry-wide culture change of respect and safety, while also providing additionally needed measures that support women in trades.
